Former Symphony X Bassist Thomas Miller Returns With “Lazarus Effect”
Former Symphony X bassist and co-founder Thomas Miller is stepping out front this year with a new project called Lazarus Effect. Miller announced a new album, Thomas Miller’s Lazarus Effect, that resurrects his prog-metal past in more ways than one.
The bassist left Symphony X for personal reasons in 1999 after appearing on the albums Symphony X, The Damnation Game, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, and Twilight in Olympus. He continued writing and recording music, eventually working with vocalist Hollywood How Portney in 2017. Finding they had great chemistry, he decided to start writing for the Lazarus Effect project.
“He then asked former bandmates Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella to lend their recording talents to the project, and then Eric Rachel, producer of Symphony X’s first six albums, to mix and master the album,” music label The Laser’s Edge explains. “The result is music and lyrics inspired by majestic themes, progressive metal, and various musical overtones.”
Thomas Miller’s Lazarus Effect will be out on October 30th, but he’s released two preview tracks already: “When Darkness Falls” and “Closer to the Sun.”
‘Closer To The Sun’ takes a more progressive direction than the first single, ‘When Darkness Falls.’ This song represents the combination of mythological lyrics, middle eastern tonalities and aggressive guitar and bass rhythms. I also liked the idea of acoustic guitar and violin to add another layer to the musical atmosphere, setting the story line as a buildup to the main rhythmic themes.”
