Mattias Hägerstrand Takes on The Ocean’s Dynamic Post-Metal Track “Departure Song”
There is something especially satisfying about seeing a bassist tackle modern progressive post metal with a four string P Bass. That is exactly what Mattias Hägerstrand is doing in this new playthrough of The Ocean’s “Departure Song.”
Hägerstrand has been holding down the low end for The Ocean since 2015 and their new album Solaris is a blend of post metal, progressive music, atmosphere, and crushing dynamics. “Departure Song” is the first full length track on Solaris and it gives Hägerstrand plenty of room to be heard.
Then there is the bass itself. In a corner of heavy progressive music where five and six string basses and multi scale instruments have become a common sight, Hägerstrand is getting it done on a four string P Bass. Sometimes simple is the right choice.
Solaris was released on September 25th through Pelagic Records.
