Brian Cook and Russian Circles Bring a Wall of Sonic Devastation to KEXP

KEXP is one of my favorite sources for great live performances and their latest session with Russian Circles is an absolute monster. This is some seriously heavy music. Just Sludgy.

The instrumental metal trio features Brian Cook on bass, Mike Sullivan on guitar, and Dave Turncrantz on drums. Cook, whose resume includes Botch, These Arms Are Snakes, and Sumac, is wielding his Electrical Guitar Company bass with its aluminum neck, delivering a massive low end that is a huge part of the band’s sound.

Released just yesterday, the session features four songs: “Deficit,” “Harper Lewis,” “Empath,” and “Eluvial.” The latter two come from the band’s ninth studio album, Nine, released August 28 through Sargent House.

My personal favorite here is “Eluvial.” The way it builds with Cook’s grinding bass underneath those massive guitar textures and pounding drums, is something else. It’s heavy, hypnotic, and absolutely crushing.

Turn it up. Way up.
