Binkbeats: Little Nerves

I just discovered the artist known as Binkbeats, and I was glad I did. The producer/multi-instrumentalist handles bass, keyboards, and percussion on this tune, “Little Nerves,” and is joined by keyboardist Niels Broos on the tune. If you did this, you might want to check out his album, P.M.P.U. Part 1, which comes out next month.

Franck Hermanny: Georgy Porgy

Bassist Franck Hermanny always impresses with his incredible facility and musicianship on the bass. This video once again showcases all of that, with an all-bass arrangement of Toto’s “Georgy Porgy.” “Here’s my little tribute to the Porcaro Brothers, and this great tune… YES, I know, Mike Porcaro didn’t play bass on the original but listening to live recordings with him,...

Meshell Ndegeocello: AOL Sessions

I remember this incredible AOL Session with Meshell Ndegeocello from 2002. It went missing for some time, but it has now resurfaced. I especially love her performance of “Faithful,” which happens around the 12:34 mark of this video. Thanks to my good friend Ted Gould for sharing this!

Reader Spotlight: Nick Castledine

Nick Castledine lives an interesting life, working as a mechanical engineer (and on his Ph.D. in robotics) while balancing a healthy gigging schedule. He started on saxophone until an opportunity in a metal band came up, which is when he made the switch to bass. Nick is this week’s No Treble reader in the spotlight (you could be next!) Here’s...

Stuart Clayton: Bass Lick of the Week #1 – Funk Groove

Our friend Stuart Clayton recently made the exciting announcement that he’s kicking off a year-long series entitled “Bass Lick of the Week.” Here’s the first entry in the series, focused on playing a funk groove with a pick. “Each week I’ll be uploading a new video where I demonstrate an original bass groove – with on-screen notation – then talk...

Zander Zon: Interstellar Medley

Zander Zon recently released another incredible arrangement. This time around, Zander plays two basses, electric cello and utilizes loopers to create a rich texture on Hans Zimmer’s Interstellar soundtrack. “There’s so many things I loved about this film. Time is a big theme throughout and a lot of the music is at 60 beats per minute (referencing seconds in a...

Vulfpeck with Bernard Purdie: Kid Charlemagne

This must be what living the dream looks like. Vulfpeck performed with drum legend Bernard Purdie at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York last year, which included this cover of Steely Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne,” a tune that originally featured Purdie. And it is obvious bassist Joe Dart was loving life.

Reader Spotlight: Zach Fowler

Meet Zach Fowler, a bassist living and working in Nashville. Zach got his start on bass thanks to his parents, who bought him a bass for Christmas as a kid, and decided since they spent the money, he should probably give it a shot. The rest is history. Zach is this week’s No Treble reader in the spotlight (you could...
