Here’s a video from the 1994 “Heineken Jazzaldia” event in Spain featuring Jeff Andrews taking a solo with the Mike Stern Band.

The following video from 2002 features guitarist Doug Wood and bassist Darren Frate playing a duet. Wood is playing 12-string acoustic guitar and Frate is playing the “phenomenal bass”, as Wood puts it.

One of my favourite Stanley Clarke songs of the 70’s is called “Hot Fun” from the album. Here’s Dutch bassist “Chiel42” performing his own 2009 version.

In this video Mexican bass player Alonso Arreola performs his original composition “Seis Letras” (Six Letters). Check out more from Arreola at his Myspace page and web site.

Here’s the young and talented Eldar Djangirov playing “Point of View”, a tune from his self-entitled 2005 release. The original tune features John Patitucci on bass and Todd Strait on drums. Here’s Mexican bass player Neftali Lopez doing a neat bass adaptation of Aram Khachaturian’s piece, originally written for piano, “Ivan Sings”. For more of Neftali Lopez check out his Myspace page.

This is the swinging Vienna Art Orchestra playing “L’art goes funk” featuring the two amazing Austrian bass players Georg Breinschmid on double bass and Robert Riegler on electric 6-string bass. Here’s a rare clip of Wayne Pedzwater of the 1980-81 incarnation of Blood, Sweat and Tears, doing a jamming bass solo. Wayne passed away in March of 2005 after suffering a battle with gastric cancer, but his bass playing legacy lives on on many albums in many different genres. Some may remember Jeff Berlin doing this song as a bass/piano duet on his album “Pump it!”. In this video renowned French bass player Jean Bisello plays both parts on his bass (with a short introduction for those of you who speak French).

I don’t know if that’s true (actually, I don’t even know how that works…) but I do feel like he’s someone more people should know about. Rarely have I encountered anyone who can make a bass/drums duo work as convincingly as Doug Johns can. Doug has a very elaborate sense of groove and technique to match, and accompanied by drummer Chris Ceja he’s unstoppable. Behold Doug Johns and Chris Ceja playing “Funk Bomb”:
