2014 Reader Favorites

At the end of each year, we tally up all the article and video views on No Treble to come up with a list of top 10 most popular bassists. This is entirely based on readership, not on opinions, polls or anything else. Just having some fun.

As with any list though, there’s always disagreement about where someone might place, if they should place, or who didn’t place at all but should have.

That’s precisely why we don’t do opinion-based lists. We’d rather just celebrate the bass players who were most read about, and who were in the most watched videos over the year.

Enjoy!

2014 Reader Favorites – #2: James Jamerson

2014 Reader Favorites – #2: James Jamerson

What can we say about James Jamerson that hasn’t already been said? The master bassist is still leading the charts around here, thanks to another great visualized bass line by Jack Stratton, an isolated bass track, and a new documentary about the Funk Machine in 2014. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough: James Jamerson’s Bass Line Visualized Vulfpeck’s Jack Stratton sent...

2014 Reader Favorites – #3: Alissia Benveniste

2014 Reader Favorites – #3: Alissia Benveniste

We never featured Alissia Benveniste before 2014, but the four videos we did share over the course of the year were enough to propel her way up the charts… to #3 on the 2014 Reader Favorite list. Watch these videos, and I’m sure you’ll see (and hear) why. Alissia Benveniste: Get Down One of our favorite musical discoveries this year...

2014 Reader Favorites – #4: Victor Wooten

2014 Reader Favorites – #4: Victor Wooten

As Victor Wooten once shared, “you can’t hold no groove (if you ain’t got no pocket).” Vic not only has deep pockets, he does all the rest too – and often at the same time. A perennial favorite around here, Vic is #4 on the 2014 Reader Favorite list. Bass Transcription: “Overjoyed” by Victor Wooten “Overjoyed” by Victor Wooten is...

2014 Reader Favorites – #5: Michael League

2014 Reader Favorites – #5: Michael League

Ever since we featured Michael League (and his band, Snarky Puppy) in May, 2011, he’s been a popular bassist here on No Treble. Michael’s band has grown in popularity – enormously so – in the years since. In 2014, we interviewed Michael to find out more. That, plus Thomas Milacher’s transcription of Michael’s arrangement of “Continuum” and some killer videos...

2014 Reader Favorites – #6: Robert Trujillo

2014 Reader Favorites – #6: Robert Trujillo

Robert Trujillo is one busy man. Not only is he working on music with Metallica, he’s also funding a film on Jaco Pastorius – which has been in the works for about four years or so, and is set to be completed this year. Robert’s video with Rodrigo y Gabriela, plus all the Jaco news, landed him on the list...

2014 Reader Favorites – #7: Zander Zon

2014 Reader Favorites – #7: Zander Zon

I’m pretty sure this is the first time Zander Zon has made the year-end top 10 list. That surprises me too. We’ve featured Zander and his incredible videos for years now, and they’re consistently among the most popular we share. He’s been blowing us away since the beginning, and somehow, I think he just keeps getting better and better, which...

2014 Reader Favorites – #8: Jack Bruce

2014 Reader Favorites – #8: Jack Bruce

We lost one of our true heroes in 2014, with the passing of Jack Bruce in October. It is still quite difficult for us to accept it. Jack released his album Silver Rails back in April, and there was a posthumous release of his 50th birthday concerts as well. Ryan Madora featured him in May for her “Bass Players to...

2014 Reader Favorites – #9: Pino Palladino

2014 Reader Favorites – #9: Pino Palladino

It amazes me how few people outside the community of bassists recognize the name Pino Palladino. Regardless, most everyone who wouldn’t recognize his name would no doubt recognize one of his brilliant bass lines. Thanks to those bass lines (in a handful of videos), plus some stories on the bass great, Pino once again makes the annual No Treble reader...

2014 Reader Favorites – #10: Paul McCartney

2014 Reader Favorites – #10: Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney kicks off our top 10 reader favorite countdown this year, thanks in large part to the isolated bass videos we’ve shared over the course of 2014. There was also a health scare for Sir Paul last year, which thankfully turned out to be just a temporary set back. Here are some of the most watched videos and most...
