François Moutin and Kavita Shah Team Up for “Interplay”

François Moutin and Kavita Shah: InterplayThe duo of a double bass and voice is one of the most powerful musical configurations. That’s clear on the new album, Interplay, by François Moutin and Kavita Shah. Sometimes intimate and sometimes exuberant, the 11-song collection ranges from jazz classics like “La Vie en Rose” to modern instrumental tunes like Dafnis Prieto’s “Blah Blah”.

“There’s a nakedness to playing duo that forces expression, I think,” says Moutin. “I love playing trio and quartet and quintet stuff, but I’ve done a lot of that in my life, and I thought I was at that point where I needed to explore more, not only of my instrument, but also of my personality, and be at risk.”

The duo is joined by two guests – French pianist Martial Sola and NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan – on two songs each. See what Interplay is all about in this clip:

The duo will be hitting the road in support of the album with dates on the West Coast, the Midwest, and Germany. Interplay is available now on CD and as a digital download (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
