Bill Wyman Announces First Album in a Decade

Bill Wyman: Drive My Car

For the first time in nearly a decade, former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has announced a new studio album. Drive My Car will arrive on August 9th to mark his first ninth solo effort. The 10-song collection will combine covers as well as originals.

“It’s not something I do every day, but sometimes I just see a guitar in the corner of the room, pick it up to play around, and then something clicks into place,” Wyman says of his songwriting.

Wyman selected five covers for the record: Bob Dylan’s “Thunder on the Mountain,” Taj Mahal’s “Light Rain,” John Prine’s “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody,” and Hans Theessink’s “Storm Warning” and “Wings.”

There’s one big name that influenced Drive My Car, but it’s not in the song choices. “I think the biggest influence on the album as a whole is JJ Cale, his laidback groove has always appealed to me. Friends I’ve played it to have aid things like ‘it really sounds like you,’ and that makes me happy. I’ve never tried to be anyone else – I’m Bill, basically.”
