Esperanza Spalding and Milton Nascimento Release “Milton + esperanza”

Milton + esperanza

Esperanza Spalding first heard of Brazilian singer-songwriter Milton Nascimento while she was a student at Berklee College of Music. She immediately became a fan of his music and would eventually get to record a song with him called “Apple Blossom” for her 2010 album Chamber Music Society. Now the collaboration has gone even further with a new album called Milton + esperanza.

The record is a combination of cuts from Nascimento’s catalog, new compositions by Spalding, and covers by The Beatles and Michael Jackson. The collection is described as a portrait of their relationship. Spalding admits that she often thinks of the singer when she’s composing.

“Ninety percent of things I write,” she says, “I’m thinking of him. I’m thinking of his voice. I’m imagining singing it with him. He’s a very present part of my creative imagination.”

The album features guest appearances by Paul Simon, Guinga, Dianne Reeves, Lianne La Havas, Shabaka, and Carolina Shorter.
