Thundercat Conjures a Cosmic Groove on “ThunderWave” with WILLOW

Thundercat has released a new live performance of “ThunderWave,” featuring WILLOW, as part of the Amazon Music Presents series.  The session opens with a dreamy, weightless feel. WILLOW plays guitar, laying down shimmering textures while Thundercat works through the tune on his six-string Ibanez bass. His sound runs through an Aguilar DB751 and DB cabinets, delivering that familiar Thundercat growl that cuts clearly through the mix.

The groove unfolds with plenty of space. Thundercat and WILLOW trade lines and stack harmonies throughout the song, and at times the blend has a feel reminiscent of the Michael McDonald era of the Doobie Brothers.  Midway through the performance, Thundercat steps forward for a bass solo, moving through fluid runs, chords, and melodic phrases, a style that has become his signature.

If you like bass that moves between harmony, melody, and groove all at once, this one is worth a watch.
