Bass of the Week: Devon Bass J6 Modern Stuns with Dye-Stabilized Boxwood Burl

This week, we’re checking out an eye-catching Devon Bass J6 Modern. Luthier Devon Smullen used a boxwood burl top that was dye-stabilized to inject greens, purples, and yellows in the wood’s natural figuring.
The rest of the bass was built with a chambered swamp ash body, a three-piece maple neck, and a birdseye maple top adorned with abalone oval inlays and glowing Luminlay side dots. For electronics, Smullen fitted it with Bartolini dual-coil pickups and a Gregory 18-volt preamp. The pickups have coil-tap switches for series, single-coil, or parallel operation, while the active/passive preamp has a three-band EQ with switchable mids.
Other features include Hipshot hardware, a magnetically fastened cover, and a clear gloss finish.
