Bass of the Week: FGN’s Mighty Power JMP2-AL-R Packs Punch with a Unique Twist

After the passing of Yuichiro Yokouchi last week, I spent some time researching the different brands that his company, Fujigen, manufactured. That led me to Fujigen’s own FGN Guitars and this Mighty Power JMP2-AL-R bass.
As part of the Mighty Power series, the four-string is described as a “hybrid bass for all music genres.” Its full-size alder body is matched to a maple neck with a slim neck profile. Add a rosewood fingerboard, and you get a combo that FGN says offers P-style comfort with a more streamlined feel for both technical and traditional styles.
The first thing you may notice, of course, is its unique pickup configuration.
“At the heart of its tone are reversed Seymour Duncan® Quarter-Pound split-coil pickups, delivering powerful, punchy lows and articulate highs that cut through any mix,” FGN writes. “Simple volume and tone controls keep your setup easy on stage or in the studio.”
A less obvious feature is the Circle Fretting System (C.F.S.) that they employ to offer better pitch and articulation.
“All frets are installed on the fingerboard in a slightly curved shape, so that every string crosses all the frets in 90 degrees, i.e. to offer a minimum contact of string on a fret, and it makes the scale length of every string even while it actually varies on conventional fretting,” they explain. “The C.F.S. is a solution of fretting on a traditional guitar and bass and it offers clearer articulation and tones which give dimension when you play a cord and also cut through the mix when you play single notes.”
