Yohannes Tona and Cory Wong Deliver Precision Funk on “Direct Flyte”

Yohannes Tona is an absolute menace in this live version of “Direct Flyte” with Cory Wong and the band at The Warfield in San Francisco.

Tona spends the entire tune glued to the groove on a 4 string Jazz bass, threading sharp lines while somehow looking completely relaxed.  Then right around the four minute mark, Tona steps out for an extended solo and just goes off. Fast runs, greasy phrasing, deep pocket, and in total control. The fun part is that everybody gets a moment. There is a killer horn feature and a ripping key solo from Kevin Gastonguay.

This band does not just play funk, they launch it out of a cannon!
