Emma Dayhuff Explores the Places That Shape Us on “Mountains”

Emma Dayhuff Mountains Album Art

Bassist, composer, and bandleader Emma Dayhuff has returned with her second solo album, Mountains, which draws on the emotions of important places in her life. Raised in Bozeman, Montana, Dayhuff grew up surrounded by jaw-dropping vistas. After moving to Chicago and then New York, she came to appreciate skyscrapers the same way she did mountain ranges.

“Looking out over the [Hudson River], I felt the same sense of kinship with the New York City skyline as I did with the mountain ranges surrounding my childhood home. The world suddenly felt smaller, less intimidating,” she explains.

Dayhuff recruited Cory Wilkes, Isaiah Collier, Jonathan Pinson, and Paul Cornish to fill out the album. However, she begins with a solo bass piece entitled “Sentinel” that sets the mood.

“The first record was an homage to the Chicago style of groove-based avant-garde playing,” Dayhuff says. “This record takes that concept of composition and mixes it with a Los Angeles approach to modern jazz, pulling from R&B, hip-hop, funk, and rock.”
