The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) has announced the Milt Hinton Institute for Studio Bass, a performance camp for student bassists focusing solely on our instrument. Running from July 14th to July 20th, the week-long event will be hosted at Montclair State University and feature an incredible faculty led by artistic director Peter Dominguez.

Educators on the staff will include Rufus Reid, Ben Williams, Luis Perdomo, Jeremy Smith, Sam Suggs, Martin Wind, Marcus McLaurine, Bill Moring, Mimi Jones, Emma Dayhuff, Diana Gannett, and Bill Crow. Students will learn bass performance techniques and ensemble playing utilizing classical, Latin, and jazz music.

Milt Hinton (1910-2000) was one of the most prolific bassists of all time. He was a jazz musician who performed with Cab Calloway for nearly 15 years before becoming a studio musician in New York City. He played on countless record dates, soundtracks, jingles, and more. His recording credits include dates with a who’s who of popular music: Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Bette Midler, and Willie Nelson, to name a few. Beyond his incredible career, Hinton was an advocate and mentor for young players who helped shape today’s bass culture.

“Two of Milt’s favorite words — ‘cohesiveness’ and ‘sharing’ — are at the core of this week-long Institute that brings together emerging bassists who often are the singular players in their own community and school ensembles,” says Dominguez.

Registration for the 2024 Milt Hinton Institute for Studio Bass will be open from December 16, 2023, through June 7, 2024. For more details and to register, visit the NJPAC website.
