First Look: Maurizio Über Basses G4 Fretless Nero
The Guitar Summit in Mannheim, Germany, is coming up from September 25th through the 27th. Marketed as Europe’s largest guitar show, the event will feature over 600 exhibitors and more than 100 workshops across seven stages. Manufacturers, large and small, will be showing off their wares, and today we’re giving a small preview of the show with the G4 Fretless Nero from Maurizio Über Basses (MüB).
Based on the company’s G4 model, the bass puts the visual focus on its dazzling fingerboard. Luthier Maurizio Caduto gave us the full scoop on the design.
“The concept behind the Nero Series is to focus the instrument’s look on a single striking visual element, wrapping everything else in a matte black finish. We have made quite a few instruments with this hand-painted artwork, mostly on bodies and necks. But not on fretless boards, as we didn’t want the glassy tone usually associated with coated boards,” he explains. “After testing a variety of resin products, we eventually settled on the one that gave us both the necessary hardness and the natural, organic tone we were looking for. The truss rod access at the back is a standard design feature of our fretless-only Müb-F, which we introduced about twelve years ago, and on all instruments with extra-long fretboards.”
Caduto built the bass with a nyatoh body and an extra-long maple neck with graphite reinforcements. It must sound as good as it looks, so the G4 Fretless Nero is loaded with a pair of Bartolini dual-coil pickups with independent volume controls. Fancy making it an active bass? Müb routed the rear cavity to fit up to a 4-band preamp. Other features include ETS/Müb brass hardware and a 34-inch scale.
