Bass of the Week: Bogensperger’s 0005P Keeps It Simple With Some Clever Twists

Bogensperger 0005P Body

I’ve been loving BassTheWorld’s continuing recap of The Guitar Summit, and this bass they featured really caught my eye. The Bogensperger 0005P is an incredible prototype built by luthier Sebastian Bogensperger, who made everything possible in his own workshop.

“The goal was a simple, direct instrument where the wood and the pickup do the talking – no tone stack, no preamp, just volume,” he shares.

Though the design seems simple, the bass features many thoughtful, artistic choices. It’s built with a fully wedged alder body, meaning the lower half of the body in playing position is wider than the top. Bogensperger explains that most people play seated with the bass leaning toward them. However, when we perform, the bass angle changes while we’re standing. The wedge keeps the same feel whether you’re seated or standing.

The top is a reed mat, adding an interesting texture to the sleek body shape, while white binding on the body and padauk neck highlight the features. Bogensperger fitted it with a single-coil pickup in an oversized housing that serves as a pickup cover, ramp, and thumb rest. Other features include a special non-tapered neck design, a 32.3-inch scale, a custom non-adjustable bridge, and a 5° headstock angle.

Bogensperger demos the bass and explains his design choices in this great walkthrough video:
