Bass of the Week: StoryWood Music SWB-1 Custom Offset Fretless Bass

This week we’re checking out another incredible build by StoryWood Music. The company specializes in using amazing reclaimed and salvaged wood. From a historic arts school to a furniture factory, this SWB-1 Custom Offset Fretless Bass has its own amazing story to tell, but we’ll let Storywood’s Tyler Townsend help.

“The core body is 120-year-old heart pine reclaimed from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC,” he says. “It is topped with a book-matched figured claro walnut top salvaged from walnut orchards in California. When nut trees eventually stop producing, they are no longer scrapped and are now salvaged into lumber, some of which is beautifully figured like this piece. The carbon-reinforced neck is reclaimed old growth mahogany taken from the Vaughan Furniture factory in Galax, Virginia, and documented on an episode of the DIY network show ‘Salvage Dawgs.’ The fingerboard is water-reclaimed kane wood from Africa with a beautiful grain pattern. The client requested minimal fret indicators, so our design includes partial lines on the low bass and high treble sides of the neck.”

The Offset is rounded out with Gotoh tuners, a Ray Ross saddleless bridge, and Ulyate pickups.
