Another giant of the bass has left us. Eugene Wright, whose playing anchored the great Dave Brubeck Quartet, passed away on December 30, 2020. He was 97 years old.

As 2020 finally draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the members of the bass community we lost this year. From rock pioneers to funk icons to visionary luthiers, their work helped to define the shape of music.

Jason Slater, who helped form Third Eye Blind, has passed away from liver failure. He was 49 years old. His daughter Alyssa confirmed the news.

Cynic bassist Sean Malone has passed away at the age of 50. A cause of death has not been revealed. The news was broken by Cynic vocalist Paul Masvidal on his Facebook page.

British jazz bassist Ron Mathewson has passed away after contracting COVID-19. He 76 years old. The news was shared on social media and on LondonJazzNews.com, where Dave Holland paid tribute to him.
