Gear Watch: Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass

Believe it or not, 2011 marks 60 years since Fender introduced the Precision bass and revolutionized bass playing. (For a quick history lesson, check out this video.) To mark the occasion, Fender is producing a special limited edition 60th Anniversary Precision Bass.

Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass

Built in the U.S., the Anniversary P-bass features an ash body, maple neck and fretboard with a modern “C” shape, and medium jumbo frets. In keeping with tradition, the pickups are vintage Precision bass split single-coils and the bridge is high-mass vintage styled. Modern tuners and knurled control knobs round out the hardware, which is mounted on the Blackguard Blonde finished bass. A commemorative chrome neck plate bears a seal honoring the sixty years of history.

The Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass is available now with an MSRP of $1999.

Looks great, but a bit too much like the Mike Dirnt with that pick-up. I prefer the old-style single coils like in the Sting and 50’s Vibe Squire.
    Still, a pretty awesome bass!

I could build that bass for less than half the price.

I wasn’t a fan of the ash body and maple fretboard combination, I kind of prefer the lightweight resonance of alder as well as the aspect and warmth of rosewood, but when I saw this bass brand new (in 2018) at half the price in Cash Converters,(a very light but sturdy flight case included) I couldn’t really resist: once you have it in handi, it is a very beautiful and clean instrument, with a superb translucent cream finish. At first I found the black pickguard somehow invading for its size, but I got used to it. Fender bridges always have put me off, but this one is really good loking, and the tuning gears are very light and progressive. Then playing it for some time confirmed that there were notable sonic differences with the rest of my Precisions which I liked: it sounds more clear and burpy. It started growing on me, and thiese days I hardly play anything else. The neck is a bit chunky for my taste, and the instrument is on the heavy side, without beeing a back breaker at all. I wouldn’t have spent 2000$ on it (although it is maybe what it’s worth) but I paid half.
It is a limited serie only build in 2011, but does anybody know how many of these were made ?
