Reader Spotlight: Lucy Kiefert

Lucy Kiefert

It is always a thrill to share the story of one of the next generation’s great up-and-coming bassists. Meet Lucy Kiefert, who at the young age of 12 is already on the path to something special. Plus, her grandmother plays bass too. Now that’s our kind of family.

Lucy is our player in the spotlight for the week of September 4th, 2012.

Bio:

My name is Lucy Kiefert, aka Bass Goddess, aka Lucy 4 String! I’m 12 years old and have been playing bass since I was 9. I was born into generations of musicians. My grandparents Buck and Debbie Fisher play in their own bluegrass band, and my uncle Scott Fisher was a major recording artist for Epic records in the mid-90’s. I have been in several bands and have attended local rock school programs. I currently play bass and sing in my own band Paper Airplane and study under my mentor Don Byrd. I’m a dreamer and I know my wish of playing music professionally will become a reality.

Location:

Middletown, MD, USA

Day gig:

Mastering Middle School

Years experience:

3 years

Bands & Gigs:

I play bass and front my band Paper Airplane. We perform many different genres of music, including rock, punk, and today’s hits. We play some local shows, but it is difficult to get a lot of gigs because we are still young.

Gear:

  • Fender Jazz Bass
  • Hartke HYDRIVE-HX410
  • Hartke LH1000 Bass Amplifier
  • I’m saving up for a Heritage Series SVT-CL and SVT-810E

Why I play the bass:

Lucy KiefertMy mom made me, haha! Really though, my parents wanted me to learn an instrument, and I picked the bass because I love the deep sound and chick bass players are cool! I also followed my grandmother’s lead, because she plays the stand up bass in her band.

My bass superpower/claim to fame

I do not use a pick, which has made my fingers very strong and helps me have more “feel”.

My influences

Geddy Lee (Rush), Joan Jett (The Runaways), Paul McCartney (The Beatles), Flea (RHCP), Nicole Fiorentino (Smashing Pumpkins).

  4. Good job” Keep on rockin”.

  5. WE are very proud of our granddaughter, I am also extremely glad to know she follows my lead for bass of course I cannot play a lick on an electric bass and I have been playing stand up bass since I was in my teens, I have always loved the bass to although my father told me that’s what I had to play in our family band so I did not have a choice. Lucy’s generation of pickers also include the Bluegrass Icon Eddie and Martha Adcock, Eddie is talented on banjo and guitar. Her grandfather Buck plays guitar, His father played guitar and my family all played instruments so she has a great start. She is a great singer to. We love you Lucy. Pappy and Gaude Gall.

  6. Good to see some young people holding down the low end! You have a wonderful singing voice, as well. Keep up the good work!
