Tom Tom Club: Genius of Love

I’ve been hooked on listening to Tom Tom Club lately, after the news of their new album coming out this month.

A splinter group of The Talking Heads, the band was formed by bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz in 1981.

“Genius of Love” is not only a huge hit for them, but its hypnotic groove has also been sampled and used as the foundation for countless hip hop songs. This performance is taken from the Talking Heads DVD Stop Making Sense.

  1. I’m back in high school all over again ;-).

  2. I remember the song but I never knew she was the one on bass. Good job!

  3. She’s faking it! Check out 4:25 and on, there are a bunch of Milli Vanilli moments!

  4. she isn`t playing the bass.. you can see it by 5:05. the bass starts while she is not playing it.. hm..

    • I’m pretty sure it’s a matter of video editing. If you look, the congas are off, too. Then before it changes views you see Krantz play the ending cadence.

  5. This is an excert from the “Stop Making Sense” video….and Tina is indeed playing the bass.

  6. If I’m not mistaken. I remember reading in bass player magazine during recording her hand cramped up and she couldn’t play so the engineer or someone else played the part. Regardless it’s probably my favorite bassline !

  7. Great song, but I wish Chris would just play drums and close his yap… : )
