Milt Hinton: Old Man Time

I recently picked up Milt Hinton’s book Bass Line, and it just reinforced what a wonderful life he led. Known for his incredible slap technique, “The Judge” was also known for his great sense of humor, and here’s a great clip that shows off his personality and playing.

The recording comes from the 1992 Mid-America Jazz Festival in St. Louis, Missouri, where Hinton was joined by Derek Smith on piano and Bobby Rosengarden on drums.

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast. Kevin appreciates all genres of music, from R&B to metal and everything in between. Connect with Kevin on Facebook and check his performance schedule on his website.

  6. I remember studying with Milt in the Hunter College Jazz Workshop in 1974-75! In that brief time, he inspired me so much. He was very encouraging in a time when bass guitar (Fender Bass) wasn’t accepted by a lot of the “old heads”. My memory of him, remains a blessing to me!
