Bass of the Week: BassLab STD
BassLab isn’t your ordinary bass manufacturer and they certainly don’t make your average bass. Developed by a musician and a physicist, the company uses a tuneable composite material instead of wood.
“We use carbon for stiffness, but add other [elements] to the mix for tone,” they shared. “It’s called ‘tuneable’, because we can also alter the tone.”
BassLab’s flagship instrument is the STD, a lightweight bass available in headed and headless models as well as 4-, 5-, and 6-string versions. Its body and neck are a single, hollow piece. The body features lots of ergonomic shaping for comfortable playing while the design helps keep it at nearly a 45° angle for a natural playing position.
The BassLab STD comes standard with a pair of Delano humbuckers and a BassXX preamp. Options on the bass include an integrated thumbrest, soundholes, custom string spacing, and more.

That right there is a Doctor Evil bass. Awesomeness.
Nice. But I’d like to find my fretless Steinberger which was stolen about 15 years ago. Trans Trem equipped (which I never used much and didn’t lock too well). Still, cool looking, played like a dreaml and everyone loved the sound. And the thing never went out of tune.

std ha
I wouldn’t mind owning one just for the novelty of it. People we see it and say “What the h@## is that?”
I’ve been ogling the Basslabs L-Bow myself. If only I had, you know, like 3 grand to drop on an instrument every time I saw one that was sexy.
