OoN Releases “Polaris”
Electric bass and bassoon may seem like a strange duo setting, but OoN is proof that the instruments blend quite nicely. The group, which consists of the fabulous Ariane Cap on 6-string bass and bassoonist Paul Hanson, has released their debut album, Polaris.
Named for the North Star, the album showcases a range of styles, from jazz to rock to electronica. Cap and Hanson trade melodic and harmonic roles throughout Polaris, with the bassist often switching between laying down a hard groove and filling the soundscape with mesmerizing tapping.
The songs on the album are mostly originals with two covers: the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” and the jazz standard “Stella By Starlight.” Each member also takes a solo track. Cap’s is “Pebble Stone Meditation,” an all bass song that will make you feel like you’re standing on top of a mountain.
