Dean Zelinsky Introduces the Mule Bass
Guitar and bass maker Dean Zelinsky has unveiled the Mule bass. Available in four- and five-string versions, the model is Zelinsky’s first to feature his patented Z-Glide Reduced Friction Neck.
The back of the maple neck features a precisely engraved pattern that reduces surface area by putting a little air between your thumb and the neck. Another unique feature is the Thumb-Rail body design, which creates an area to anchor your thumb along the length of the body.
Each bass is fitted with a pair of the company’s DZPLG humbucker pickups with a two-band EQ. Other features include a 3-ply cream pickguard, a 4- or 5-saddle vintage bridge, and a high gloss finish.
The Dean Zelinsky Mule Bass comes in 3-Tone Sunburst, Trans-Amber, Classic Black, Gun Metal Gray, and Vintage White. It’s available only directly from the manufacturer with prices of $649 for the four string and $699 for the five string.

I’d love to get my hands on one of these so Ibcould try it out. This is one of the first mid priced not P not J basses that has piqued my interest in a while. Unfortunately there aren’t any dealers in my area and I don’t want to buy one to try out, find out I don’t like it and then have to repack the thing and pay return shipping. I’ve ridden in that rodeo before and it’s more work than it’s worth. Has anyone out there tried one of these and willing to write a review?
I’m wondering what the neck feel is like: P-bass or Jazz?
I like everything about it except the basswood body. The Thumb-Rail is very appealing.
Personal taste.
