The Bassmonsters: Sweet Child O’ Mine

I recently returned from the International Society of Bassists convention where there was a week’s worth of double bass performances, clinics, and masterclasses from the world’s foremost players. One of the performances that stuck out was by the Bassmonsters, a double bass quartet that plays arrangements of rock, pop, and metal songs. The group takes on Metallica, Michael Jackson, The Eagles and more.

Here’s a clip of the Bassmonsters live in Munich from 2014 performing the Guns N’ Roses hit “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Bandleader Claus Freudenstein takes the lead by playing the song’s iconic intro utilizing harmonics. The group is filled out by Szymon Marciniak, Emilio Yepes Martinez, and Stephan Bauer who each take turns playing the bass line, melody, and harmony parts.

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast. Kevin appreciates all genres of music, from R&B to metal and everything in between. Connect with Kevin on Facebook and check his performance schedule on his website.
