Mass Mental Debuts Its Take on “Come On Come Over” From “Jaco” Soundtrack

Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo’s documentary about the late Jaco Pastorius, who revolutionized electric bass playing, before dying tragically at age 35, is almost here — the film and its soundtrack are set for a Nov. 27 release.

The first single from the Jaco soundtrack is Trujillo side project Mass Mental’s version of “Come On Come Over” from Pastorius’ 1976 debut solo album. Mass Mental features not only Trujillo, but also Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Armand Sabal-Lecco, a bassist originally from Cameroon, known for his work with Paul Simon. Sabal-Lecco is also noted for work with the Brecker Brothers, John Patitucci, and Stanley Clarke.

Trujillo recently told Billboard that he wanted to include both Pastorius’ well-known work and something a little different on the soundtrack album. So, he turned to Mass Mental — with whom he had released a studio album and a live album in Japan in 1999 and 2000, respectively. “The music is really experimental and super funky, and every time we do a show for some weird reason it turns into a party and celebrity musicians show up. We did our own particular version of ‘Come On Come Over, and I’m so proud of it. It can never be as great as the original, but ours is different and we just set out to do the best we could,” Trujillo said.

Mass Mental will play a Nov. 22 show with Hipster Assassins for the film’s world premiere at the Ace Theater in Los Angeles Mass Mental & Hipster Assassins celebrating Pastorius. Players will include Trujillo, Pastorius’ son, Felix Pastorius, Sabal-Lecco, Christopher Joseph Ward, Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe, Brooks Wackerman, Billy Idol, Corey Glover, and more. Mass Mental’s Facebook page is currently very Jaco-friendly.

Other alternate versions of Pastorius classics on the soundtrack come from Pastorius’ daughter Mary (“Longing”), Tech N9ne (“Shine”), and Rodrigo Y Gabriela (“Continuum”). The original “Continuum” is also featured on the soundtrack, alongside other Jaco solo music, as well as his work with Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, and Weather Report.
