Stanley Clarke Goes Acoustic in Jazz Trio
Bass superstar Stanley Clarke is exploring his acoustic side on D-STRINGZ, his acoustic collaboration with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and guitarist Biréli Lagrène.
What’s notable is that all three are most well known for their work in electric jazz. The trio first played together at a 2012 Paris concert celebrating Ponty’s 50-year career. D-STRINGZ features the trio’s takes on classics like Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages,” John Coltrane’s “Blue Train,” and the Cannonball Adderley hit “Mercy Mercy Mercy,” written by Josef Zawinul.
Originals include a reworking of Lagrène’s “Stretch,” and “To and Fro,” which Ponty wrote for a trio featuring Clarke and banjo player Belá Fleck. Clarke originals include “Bit of Burd” and “Paradigm Shift,” the latter written to commemorate the election of President Barack Obama.
D-STRINGZ is available on CD and as a digital download (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
