Reuben Rogers Continues to Hold Down the Low End on Charles Lloyd and The Marvels’ Latest

Charles Lloyd & The Marvels: I Long to See YouCharles Lloyd & The Marvels’ latest album on Blue Note Records, I Long to See You, features not only the jazz group’s longtime bassist, Reuben Rogers, but also some special guest vocalists.

Norah Jones is the featured vocalist on “You Are So Beautiful,” while Willie Nelson steps in for “Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream.” While the album features covers of the work of other artists, as well as versions of traditional songs, it also sees the band covering some of Lloyd’s own earlier work, like “Of Course, Of Course” and “Sombrero Sam.” In addition, there’s a totally new tune, “Barche Lamsel.”

Rogers, known for his work on acoustic and electric basses and for his compositional and teaching skills, has played with saxophonist bandleader Lloyd since 2007. Blue Note President Don Was, also a bassist, co-produced the album with Lloyd’s wife, Dorothy Darr.

I Long to See You is available on CD and as a digital download (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
