In Memoriam: Marshall “Rock” Jones
Sad news to report today: Ohio Players bassist Marshall “Rock” Jones has passed away after battling cancer and recently suffering a stroke. He was 75 years old.
Jones was a founding member of the Ohio Players precursor band The Ohio Untouchables in 1959, though he left after getting in a fistfight 1964. Another shakeup led to Jones rejoining in 1970. Their first hit single was “Funky Worm,” which got them signed to Mercury Records. They went on to score hits with “Skin Tight”, “Fire”, and “Love Rollercoaster” through the ‘70s. Each of the singles were awarded Gold certifications.
Jones was inducted with the band into the inaugural class of the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
“He was inventive, and he was creative. He was a great musician,” Ohio Players leader James “Diamond” Williams said in a statement. “Marshall Jones contributed greatly, and we will miss him.”

Watching Unsung today of the Ohio Players. This band was just “Bad” with their funky style. The Ohio Players music will forever be hits. Their voices were strong and melodically vibrant, and their style was impeccable.
