Reader Spotlight: Selina Finsel

Selina FinselMeet Selina Finsel, a relative newcomer on bass who has already enjoyed a nice start to her musical career and on social media. Selina is No Treble’s reader spotlight this week. Here’s her story…

Bio:

Former A&R Rep and Booking Agent in Los Angeles and former Journalist/Editorial Administrator for the Santa Monica Observer, Selina started playing the bass seriously in December 2012. Since then, she has played shows across the country, appeared on three albums and is a member of the Recording Academy. She is the founder of the Facebook bass page “The Low Down” and the group “Introbass Yourself” where bass players can post videos of themselves playing without fear of negativity. She has also had the pleasure of talking to her favorite bass players like Victor Wooten, Michael Manring, Nathan East, Leland Sklar and Billy Sheehan to name a few. She got her nickname “The Fox” because of her clever billiards tactics and, it also happens to be her favorite animal. Selina is known for spreading positive vibes within the community and she has a passion for what she does and she loves the bass family.

Location:

Mobile, Alabama, USA

Day gig:

Surveillance Officer

Years experience:

3½ years

Bands & Gigs:

Former bassist for The Music Therapy Experiment. Currently doing studio work.

Gear:

  • Fender Jazz
  • Yamaha RBX250 Fretless
  • Yamaha BB415 5-String
  • Ibanez GSR206SM 6-String
  • Carvin Pro Bass 500 Amp/410 Cab
  • Roland Cube 60XL

Why I play the bass:

I love the rumble of the bass. Need I say more?

My bass superpower/claim to fame:

I don’t really feel I have a superpower but, I do listen to what other players are doing and I am very careful not to step on anyone. The most important thing for me is to be solid and I try and choose my notes wisely. As for my “claim to fame,” I guess it would be that I have accomplished so much in such a short period of time.

My influences:

Victor Wooten, Nathan East, Michael Manring, Leland Sklar, John Myung, Billy Sheehan…
