Phell and Kalbach Release “Killer Walking Bass” Book

If you’re looking for ways to spice up your walking bass lines, Teymur Phell and Jim Kalbach have you covered with their new book Killer Walking Bass. Aimed at the advanced jazz bassist, the authors wrote a collection of melodic walking lines to play with guidance on creating your own as well.

“Unlike other books on jazz bass, the authors focus on melody as a key driver in walking. The aim is to help advanced players extend their vocabulary and grow as musicians,” they write.

The 65-page book has examples that cover standard jazz changes including contrafacts of “All the Things You Are”, an F Blues, “Giant Steps”, “Green Dolphin Street”, “Stella By Starlight”, and “I Got Rhythm”. Chapters cover melodic elements, principles, analysis, and resources.
