Primus: “Tommy the Cat” with Upright Bass

Wayne Brannon shared this video on the No Treble Facebook group, and it got my attention. “A little fun! From 1992, Primus appears as Bob Cock and His Yellow Socks for a jazzed up version of ‘Tommy The Cat’!” he wrote.

Les Claypool’s bass line on the song is so iconic that hearing him take a different direction on the upright is a real treat. Although it’s bootleg quality, the video shows the trio having fun with it. Claypool takes a bass solo around the 3:10 mark. He even tries to thump and pluck like he would on an electric, but stops after a couple bars to say, “It just wasn’t meant to be.”
