Scott Pingel and Lars Ulrich: Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)

Metallica teamed up with the San Francisco Symphony at the Chase Center to tackle the metal juggernaut’s hits in a show dubbed “S&M 2.” Together, they played “Master of Puppets,” “One,” “Moth Into Flame,” and more. One of the most jaw-dropping performances came in the second set.

Everyone laid out but symphony bassist Scott Pingel, who picked up an electric upright bass and began an open improv that turned into an unbelievable version of the Cliff Burton solo “Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth).” Just like the recording, Lars Ulrich jumps in for the double-timed last section.

Fellow bassist Lloyd Goldstein shared this fan-shot video saying, “This is truly amazing. Every bit of Scott Pingel’s technical and musical skills and hard work are evident here. The result is mesmerizing.”
