Video Premiere: Endless Field’s “Wolfhead”

Bassist Ike Sturm and guitarist Jesse Lewis have teamed up to form the group Endless Field, whose new album, Alive in the Wilderness, is available now. Today, we’re excited to premiere a breathtaking new video of Sturm performing the solo double bass piece “Wolfhead,” which features the bassist in a slot canyon in the Southern Utah desert landscape.

The stunning background is important for several reasons. First, the duo’s music is environmentally conscious, with all proceeds benefitting the Natural Resources Defense Council. Second, it carries a deep personal meaning to Sturm.

“My dad brought me to the infinite landscapes of the West when I was a child, making an indelible mark within me. His cassette tape of Metheny’s Still Life (Talking) soared on constant repeat on the car stereo,” Sturm tells us. “The day I played this acoustic bass solo marked the 5th anniversary of my dad’s passing. Our team hiked into the mouth of a brick red Utah slot canyon, knowing we had entered another dimension. I felt totally on edge, the weight of the moment colliding with my plan to completely improvise in this sacred temple. I was flooded with memories, embraced by the gigantic walls around me. ‘Wolfhead’ was my very first take: a dialogue with these ancient formations and the space between us.”

Sturm captured the moment with sweeping melodies and thick drones, beautifully getting the most out of his bass with and without the bow.

Alive in the Wilderness is available now through Bandcamp, iTunes, and Spotify.
