John Goldsby Trio Releases “Segment, Vol 1”

John Goldsby Trio: Segment, Vol 1WDR Big Band Bassist John Goldsby has just released a new trio album called Segment Vol. 1, featuring fellow WDR rhythm section members pianist Billy Test and drummer Hans Dekker. Recorded in June 2020, Goldsby calls the five-song collection a “celebration of small group music.”

“The album offers a broad range of big-hearted, focused, joyful music from one of the world’s busiest jazz rhythm sections,” the liner notes read. “The trio displays an uncanny clairvoyance—the kind only heard in groups who perform together regularly. Sensitive, swinging, and grounded by the many years they’ve spent accompanying members of the international jazz scene, Goldsby/Dekker/Test captures the wonderful, wild pulse of the jazz tradition while adding innovative touches of color, light, and groove.”

Goldsby, who is also a renowned author and educator, also created the album as a means of recuperating. He was diagnosed with cancer late last year and used the planning and recording of Segment to re-examine his life.

“My illness gave me time to reflect on my relationship to everything that is important and meaningful to me: my family and my music,” the bassist writes. “Now, more than ever, music is an essential part of life.”

Great sounding album. I would recommend it as a audiophile album. And the performance is astonishing.
