Bass of the Week: MG Bass Guitars New Extreman
MG Bass Guitars has a special talent for combining woods and shapes to create functional works of art. This New Extreman is a prime example of that.
Built in New Hampshire, the bass’s unique singlecut body shape has a deep cutaway to reach the end of the fingerboard, which goes fretless after 24 frets. Luther Mauricio Costa crafted the body from black walnut with spalted maple and purpleheart to create the top. Purpleheart also runs through the maple fingerboard and is used for the pickup cover. Its neck is a seven-piece laminate of, once again, maple and purpleheart.
This particular bass is fitted with a Bartolini MM-style and a Bartolini active/passive preamp, although several options are available. Hardware includes a Monorail bridge design with Gotoh GB707 tuners.
