Ethan Iverson Releases “Every Note Is True” with Larry Grenadier

Ethan Iverson: Every Note Is TruePianist Ethan Iverson has released a new trio album called Every Note Is True. The record is his debut on the Blue Note label, and for the occasion, he tapped the masterful rhythm section of Jack DeJohnette and Larry Grenadier.

The former Bad Plus pianist says that while he has been exploring the jazz tradition with other projects, this record brings back some of his pop and rock influences along with “bright big piano.” There is plenty of straight-ahead swing, to be sure, as Iverson notes the 1962 album Money Jungle as an inspiration.

“It’s great to hear Larry and Jack swinging out,” Iverson exclaims. “With the two of them, you don’t need a lot of material. If you bring in something really simple, no more than basic sketches, they’ll take it over and make it sound great. That’s very much in the tradition of those great Blue Note records from the 50s and 60s, where the tunes are memorable but there aren’t too many notes on a page.”
