Hawktail Releases “Place of Growth”

Hawktail: Place of GrowthHawktail has returned with a third album, entitled Place of Growth. The record is described as their most conceptual, leading listeners on a journey through the natural world. The songs stick together as a whole, with the band saying it’s designed for a single sitting.

The acoustic quartet’s beautiful tones and melodies will certainly lead to multiple listens.

Hawktail is the unique combination of fiddler Brittany Haas, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, guitarist Jordan Tice, and bassist Paul Kowert. Kowert, who is also a member of Punch Brothers, takes his fair share of melodies in addition to providing the music’s backbone.

Place of Growth came from the bassist’s folder of musical ideas. Several of the songs originated from snippets created as far back as the band’s beginnings in 2016 and 2017.

“The first ideas for ‘Wanderings’ and ‘Updraft originated in late 2016. Much of the ‘Big Sun’ lead had been kicking around since late 2017,” the band shares. “Two Hawktail albums elapsed while these ideas remained unfinished. When Lena Jonsson challenged the band to ‘tune-swap’ in early 2021, they got a creative jolt. Subsequently, they decided to make an album, finishing the aforementioned material. ‘Shallows’ and ‘Pomegranate in the Oak Tree’ arrived just in time during this process.”
