Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Live at Fillmore (1997)” Out Now

Five years after his passing, a piece of Tom Petty’s legacy has been released from his archives for fans to enjoy. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Live at the Fillmore (1997) is an enormous box set taken from the band’s residency at the San Francisco venue, which the famed singer-songwriter called “the highpoint of our time together as a group.”

The new release comes in a 2-CD or 3-LP set as well as deluxe editions, which double the number of tracks. Each set of the band’s residency changed night to night with rearranged versions of their hits, deeper cuts, and many cover songs.

The bassist for The Heartbreakers at that time was Howie Epstein, who was in the band for 20 years between Ron Blair’s stints. Epstein’s solid bass lines hold the songs together, but he could also open up to expand with his bandmates.
