Suzanne Vega with Mike Visceglia: “Left of Center” Live in Montreaux

Sometimes a good bass line is all you need. Singer/songwriter extraordinaire Suzanne Vega knows that.

Here’s an amazing clip of her performing “Left of Center” with longtime bassist Mike Visceglia, who delivers a masterclass in accompaniment. The arrangement is just for the duo, with Visceglia filling out the rhythm and harmony will a well-crafted bass line that utilizes some sparse chords to differentiate the song’s sections.

If you want to give it a shot, Visceglia recently posted someone’s transcription of his lines. “Someone, somehow, had the perspicacity and patience to transcribe my solo bass accompaniment of Suzanne Vega’s ‘Left of Center,'” he wrote. Check out the transcription here.

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast. Kevin appreciates all genres of music, from R&B to metal and everything in between. Connect with Kevin on Facebook and check his performance schedule on his website.
