Mission Engineering and Fender Team Up To Revive Sunn Amplifiers
After decades of darkness, the Sunn will rise again. Mission Engineering and Fender have teamed up to announce the return of Sunn Amplifiers, a brand from the ’60s and ’70s that was made famous by Pete Townsend, Jimi Hendrix, The Melvins, and more.
“Resurrecting the Sunn brand has long been a dream of our team, and we are thrilled to be the trusted partner Fender has selected to bring this vision to life,” said James Lebihan, CEO of Sunn Amplification. “We are honored to have a robust group of Sunn enthusiasts, including some of the original employees, join us on this journey to restore Sunn for musicians worldwide. If you know the Sunn brand, and the historical significance it has in the music industry, you understand why the world needs it back.”
The new lineup includes four cabinets: a 1×12” full range monitor, a 2×12” full range monitor, a 2×12” guitar and bass speaker, and a 2×15” guitar and bass speaker. The details on the cabs aren’t online yet, but the company has specs for two bass heads and a bass preamp.
The 200S is a 65-watt “ultra-linear” bass head featuring a KT-88 tube power stage and Dynaco transformers. It has a streamlined control set with volume, treble, and bass knobs with hi-boost and low-boost switches. In between the power and standby switches is a polarity switch. All in, the 200S weighs 32 pounds.
Next up is the Beta Bass head, which is a dual-channel switching 100-watt amp featuring Sunn’s CMOS technology. Each channel has Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble, Reverb, and level controls with a master Volume to control the amp’s total output. Sunn also offers the Beta Bass Pre, which takes all of the amp’s circuity and removes the Class D power section.
The new Sunn product line will be available later this year. Prices on the range go from $499 to $3,299.
