Green Day Returns with “Saviors”
Green Day has returned with Saviors, which marks the group’s 14th album. It comes 30 years after their major label debut, Dookie, and 20 years after their milestone record American Idiot. Saviors brings the group back to form, leaning on the politically charged side of American Idiot.
The trio of Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt waited four years since their last album for their latest, partly to focus on the quality of the songs.
“We were definitely trying to write one of the best records of our career,” Dirnt said on Q with Tom Power. “That’s for sure … We even held off on a lot of touring this year and said, ‘Look, let’s just really focus on giving these songs time to evolve.'”
In Rolling Stone, he elaborated that their first single “The American Dream is Killing Me” was the first to be written but last to be completed.
“‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’ was written by Billie [Joe Armstrong] almost four years ago. But we all knew it was just low-hanging fruit,” he said. “We’re not a parody of who we are, and songs like that need time to be fleshed out. If that means just sitting back and letting life happen, so be it. And it was one of the last things we recorded.”
Dirnt delivers his signature driving bass lines accented with runs throughout the album, but noticeably in the song “1981”.
Saviors is available now on CD, vinyl, cassette, and as a digital download (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
