Pops Magellan Releases Debut Single, “Misunderstood”

Pops Magellan: Misunderstood

We were lucky to catch up with Pops Magellan, aka Poliana Magalhães, this summer, where she gave us the scoop on her upcoming debut album. Damage doesn’t have a release date set yet, but the bassist has just dropped the first single, “Misunderstood.”

The genre-blurring track features Magellan on bass and synthesizers. She enlisted Taylor Graves for additional keys and co-production, as well as vocalist Astyn Turr and drummer Justin Brown.

Things kick off with a deep bass double-stops before kicking into the groove. It then evolves into a breakbeat style with a more electronica feel. In our interview, Magellan explained that she doesn’t have a set writing process, which helps her be open to the creative spirit.

“I like to experiment and freestyle. I don’t have like an actual process,” she said. “Each song is different, but ‘Misunderstood’ is a song that I’m really proud of because I was able to play things myself, come up with the ideas, the structure, and program the drums.”

“Misunderstood” is streaming now on multiple platforms.
