Jaco Pastorius: Slang (Live in Reggio Emilia, 1980)

The Jaco Pastorius Archive dropped another live recording, and this one is special. Recorded in Italy in 1980, here’s Jaco performing his famous “Slang” solo. This one is different from a lot of versions you’ve heard.

“In October 1980, Weather Report performed five shows in Italy. All of them featured great bass solos by Jaco Pastorius, but the song selection and variety of this one might make it my favorite,” JPA shared. “It was recorded [during] the second-to-last Italy date, which took place at the Palazzo dello Sport ‘Giulio Bigi’ in Reggio Emilia, Italy, on October 27.”

“This solo is full of interesting quotes and bass arrangements and is probably one of the longest solos of the tour. You might catch songs like ‘River People’ and ‘Blackbird,’ though the most surprising of them all is The Beatles’ ‘Fool on the Hill,’ which starts at 4:44.”
