A Funk Groove Tribute: Kevin Scott Nods to Rocco and Jaco
I was fortunate enough to see the Govt Mule show this week in Chicago. Kevin was in top form and we were able to hang out a bit before the show and chat all things bass. This made me want to go back in his archives and share one of my favorite videos of his. Kevin Scott has shared a video that puts a spotlight on his deep groove and feel. The clip is titled “Rocco Jamerson Jaco | Funk Groove” and shows Scott paying respect to Rocco Prestia and Jaco Pastorius while putting his own stamp on the music.
Playing his Serek bass, Scott locks into a tight funk pocket that recalls Rocco’s precise 16th-note lines. He adds melodic phrasing and harmonic touches that nod to Jaco without ever drifting into imitation. The result is a performance that connects two distinct voices in bass history through Scott’s own approach.
