Tony Levin Shares Update on BEAT Tour Rehearsals

Beat

Fans are eagerly awaiting the BEAT Tour, which will see Adrian Belew and Tony Levin performing music from their 80’s King Crimson catalog with Steve Vai and Danny Carey. With the first date in San Jose just two weeks away, Levin shared an awesome diary entry on his website about the group’s early rehearsals.

The bassist took tons of video and notes on their rehearsal at Steve Vai’s studio, where they were running the material before moving onto larger production rehearsals.

“Along with a couple of us vintage guys(!) there’s quite a bit of vintage gear being used, as we harken back to the 80s,” Levin quipped with some pictures of Belew’s Roland Jazz Chorus amps. He also shared a photo of an Ampeg rig with his yellow and blue MusicMan StingRay originally used on the “Three of a Perfect Pair” tour from 1984. To perform all the music, he’ll also be bringing along his old Chapman Stick.

“For me, going through the material from the 80s has been surprising. I forgot how much I’d chosen to play the Stick over the bass, and there were some pieces with cross time signatures that are proving pretty challenging to get back under my fingers,” he wrote. “But I can just remind myself that the heavy lifting here is being done by Danny and Steve, who are doing an amazing job with the material.”

Levin finished the post by saying they’ll soon move onto production rehearsals with their full gear setups and “practice practice practice!”

The BEAT Tour will include 65 tour dates around the U.S. and Canada. See below for the full itinerary.
