Top 10: The Most Watched Bass Videos (September 2024)
It’s time to celebrate some great bass with the monthly top 10 reader-favorite bass videos. Two videos with Tony Levin (spanning many years between) are kicking things off this month.

1. Steve Gadd & Tony Levin: Bass and Drums Groove (1972)
From the 1972 Montreux show, Steve Gadd and Tony Levin are throwing down on a sweet groove. This was filmed during their performance with Chuck Mangione.
2. BEAT (Belew, Levin, Vai, Carey): “Sleepless” Live in San Jose
The highly anticipated BEAT tour began on Thursday in San Jose, California. Here’s the quartet of Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey performing “Sleepless” from “Three of a Perfect Pair.”
3. Jaco Pastorius: “Slang” (Live at the Greek Theatre with Joni Mitchell, 1979 / Night 4)
The Jaco Pastorius Archive shared another incredible recording yesterday. Joni Mitchell’s “Shadows and Light” tour stop at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles happened 45 years ago this month. This soundboard recording comes from the fourth of five concerts, and the second to last concert of the tour.
4. Consider the Source: Mouthbreather
Consider the Source has returned with their first new single in years. “Mouthbreather” is a monstrous headbanger that marks the first release from an exciting upcoming album.
5. Polyphia: Ernie Ball “Big Sound” Session
Ernie Ball has introduced a new artist session video series called “Big Sound” that features up-close studio sessions. They launched it with a three-song set by Texas-based instrumental masters Polyphia captured during rehearsals for their summer tour.
6. Vulfpeck: Jazz à Vienne (2024)
On July 16th, Vulfpeck performed at the 43rd edition of Jazz à Vienne on the Théâtre Antique stage. Joe Dart and the band got the crowd going with a nearly 2-hour performance, which you can see in its entirety here.
7. Christian Kussmann: Maria, es el miedo
Christian Kussmann recently got a new Mattisson Series IV bass, and he got to try it out in a special place. He shared this video with us.
8. Charles Berthoud: Yesterday
Charles Berthoud shared another video showcasing his impressive skills, saying, “This is what a completely unedited bass solo sounds like.” The song is “Yesterday” by The Beatles, and it is a beautiful solo bass arrangement.
9. Frowin Ickler: “Another One Bites The Dust” (in the Style of Mark King)
Frowin Ickler hit us up with a new video, and this one is killer. He calles it a “slap attack” version of “Another One Bites The Dust” by Queen.
10. Richard Bona: Calm Down
KNKX hosted Richard Bona in their Seattle studios in October 2023. They just released this video of his performance of “Calm Down.”
