Gary Peacock Featured on New Live Album from Keith Jarrett Archives

Jazz piano great Keith Jarrett is a master of interpreting jazz standards. One of his many examples is a 1994 album called Live at the Deer Head Inn, and now, 30 years later, the remainder of that 1992 performance has been released as The Old Country: More from the Deer Head Inn.
“This particular evening was a warm, humid, rainy autumn night in the Pocono Mountains,” Jarrett recounts. “The room was full of people and outside on the porch more people listened through the screen doors.”
Jarrett was joined by drummer Paul Motian and genius bass player Gary Peacock, who passed away in 2020. Peacock was a longstanding member of the pianist’s “Standards Trio,” which featured drummer Jack DeJohnette. The performance at the Deer Head Inn was spontaneously organized and would be the only occasion that Jarrett, Peacock, and Motion played as a trio.
“Not only had I not played piano at the Deer Head for 30 years, but I hadn’t played with Paul Motian for 16 years,” Jarrett said in the original album’s liner notes. “So it was like a reunion and a jam session at the same time.”
Peacock was swinging as ever and delivering great solos all night. Check out the trio’s take of Monk’s “Straight No Chaser,” with a fantastic bass feature halfway through.
The Old Country: More from the Deer Head Inn is available on CD and digitally via Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more.
